What do you do when your old room mate receives a collection notice?

  • We don't really talk to her anymore cause her husband does not want her talking to friends ... we received this collection notice (for her wedding ring) he totally made her buy her own wedding ring! Anyways they keep sending her mail here and they don't stop calling.

  • That's pretty sad she bought her own wedding ring. Sounds like your afraid of contacting her as it may cause trouble for her I would hesitate as well ... chances are she knows the ring is in collection so I would just ignore it.

  • If you have her number then call her and tell her you have some important mail for her. If you don't have the number then call the agency and say she no longer lives there and to find her new address. If they don't stop calling then call the police and tell them they're harassing you.

  • WRITE "RETURN TO SENDER" ON THE UNOPENED LETTER. INFORM THE CALLERS SHE DOES NOT LIVE HERE ANYMORE AND THAT IF THEY CONTINUE TO CALL, YOU WILL PRESS HARASSMENT CHARGES. AND THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE A FORWARDING ADDRESS FOR HER. IF THEY TRY TO GET NASTY, TELL THEM YOU ARE RECORDING THEM. THAT WILL DO IT.

  • Give the callers her new phone number. Wish her Godspeed. Can you say "Adios?"

  • Return the mail, Change your number.

If this doesn't work, or isnt an option then you have to ask the collection agency to STOP calling you. Let them know what is going on, and that you are not involved. Start keeping a log of phone calls, who you talk to, and the number of letters they send. They should stop calling if you threaten to take all this to a lawyer.

Call your friend and let her know that if she doesn't take care of it, you will be providing her contact information to the agency. You have a life, and it isn't fair to you.

Like it or not, collection agencies have a job to do. Make their job easier, and you will benefit. Stop yelling at them when you answer the phone, talk to them, and they will back away.

  • OK...her husband made her buy her own wedding ring and he doesn't want her talking to friends? She has bigger problems than a collection agency on her back. This woman needs a lifeline.

Call her to tell her that you have mail for her that looks important. When you are alone, tell her that you're there for her if she needs help or a safe place to go in an emergency.

Many abusers start off by making their victims accept things they wouldn't ordinarily accept (paying for her own wedding ring) and then isolate their victims from family and friends to ensure that the victim cannot escape.
