Chris Day (Spurs)
(sub: Kelvin Davis, Luton);
Jon O'Connor (Everton)
(sub: Matt Carbon, Derby),
Richard Rufus (Charlton),
Ben Thatcher (Wimbeldon)
(sub: Chris Plummer, QPR),
Wes Brown (Man United,
Terry Cooke (Man United)
M Ford (Leeds United)
(sub: Lee Hendrie, Aston Villa),
Chris Holland (Newcastle United),
Lee Briscoe (Sheffield Wed) ,
Kevin Gallen (QPR)
(sub: Ian Moore, Tranmere),
Bruce Dyer (Crystal Palace)
Just one has gone on to play for the senior England side(Brown) and most aren't even in the Premiership these days. If we contrast that with todays squad I think our approach to the U21's has changed, it could now be viewed as an England 'B' squad. I also feel that getting an U21 cap means more these days. This is the most recent squad:
MATT MURRAY - Wolves
RHYS EVANS - Swindon Town
LEE GRANT - Derby County
GLEN JOHNSON - Chelsea
STUART PARNABY - Middlesbrough
PETER CLARKE - Everton
TONY HIBBERT - Everton
PHILIP JAGIELKA - Sheffield United
PAUL KONCHESKY - Charlton Athletic
GARETH BARRY - Aston Villa
DAVID PRUTTON - Southampton
STEVEN SIDWELL - Reading
JERMAINE JENAS - Newcastle United
DARREN AMBROSE - Newcastle United
GARY O'NEIL - Portsmouth
MICHAEL TONGE - Sheffield United
JERMAINE PENNANT - Arsenal
JERMAIN DEFOE - West Ham United
SHOLA AMEOBI - Newcastle United
CARLTON COLE - Chelsea
BOBBY ZAMORA - Tottenham Hotspur
DARREN BENT - Ipswich Town
DEAN ASHTON - Crewe Alexandra
FRANCIS JEFFERS - Arsenal
Some of these players already have senior caps and most will end up playing in the Premiership if they don't already do so. I also think this team is vastly superior to the 1996 squad.
Thoughts?
Could you please post the Croatian team from that game?
Sorry, it was off the FA's website and they only listed the England team.
The only thing I really don't like about the Under-21 squad is that it needs an experienced coach with a proven pedigree of developing youngsters. For some reason we have David Platt whose tactics are awful (witness the Euro champs in 2002 and some of the qualifying games here) and some of his player selections have been dubious to say the least.
For example he has persisted with playing David Prutton for over three years now seemingly because Prutton was with him at Forest, and Platt was the one who gave him his first starts. If you've seen Prutton play (on Southampton's subs bench now) or for the U-21s you will know that he is very much an average talent who I would best my house on never even coming close to playing for the senior team. Why not give that slot to someone like Nigel Reo-Coker of Wimbledon? (who is a wonderful talent btw, already their captain and best player at just turned 19 and wanted by several premiership teams. Pompey had a million quid bid for him a few weeks ago).
But anyway, sack Platt, appoint someone who will develop the talent and get them used to playing in a better shape and getting results. Platt makes me pine for Peter "unbeaten" Taylor.
